Rope & Tissu

Versatile Arts currently offers two classes specific to the vertical apparatus (rope and tissu):  an intermediate/advanced level rope and tissu class and super-hard-core advanced rope class.

Be sure to check out our Versatile Arts Workshops, too! Some of our instructors are offering workshops you may be interested in.

Rope and Tissu 2/3

Tuesday evenings from 7:40 to 9:10 pm. Taught by Sandy.

You asked for it, you got it: a class devoted to the vertical apparatus. Expand your vocabulary, explore transitions, and build your endurance in the air.

This is an intermediate/advanced class, requiring at least 2 sessions of prior aerial instruction. Please contact us to determine whether this class is appropriate for you.

Prerequisite: Two sessions of aerial instruction or Instructor approval. Must be able to do straddle-ups in the air and be at least working on windmill.

The following classes are not being offered this session – let us know if you are interested in them for a future session!

Advanced Rope 3+

This class is not being offered this session. Taught by Ezra and Una.

Ready to take your rope skills to the next level? In this 2-hour class, Ezra Weill and Una Bennett are going to show you how! Ezra and Una will soon have you moving on the rope in all new ways. Flairs, rollups, pop-throughs, fancy setups, crazy transitions, and open drops are all on the menu.

This is an advanced class, requiring at least 1 year of aerial experience. Specific prerequisites are listed below. Please contact us to determine whether this class is appropriate for you.  Drop-ins are allowed with prior approval.

Prerequisite: Current instructor approval and the following:

  • solid windmill
  • solid simple back planche
  • working toward straight-armed stradde-ups
  • solid flag/overall good grip strength

Burly Tissu (aka Fabric for Rope Artists)

This class is not being offered this session.

Wanting to do a tissu act but don’t want to look like all the other tissu acts out there?  In this class, Sandy and Bev will show you how to adapt many of the burlier rope and straps tricks to the tissu, creating a whole new style of fabric act.  Bev will even teach you some moves on straps as part of the class, so get ready to work those shoulders and core muscles.  Oversplits most definitely NOT a prereq. In fact, we will not do any footlock-splits in this class – possibly no footlocks at all.  And no double-star.

This is an intermediate/advanced class, requiring at least 1 year of aerial experience. Specific prerequisites are listed below. Please contact us to determine whether this class is appropriate for you.

Prerequisite: Current instructor approval and the following:

  • solid, controlled windmill
  • working toward straight-armed stradde-ups
  • solid flag/overall good grip strength
  • reliable shoulders

Scary Drops 2/3

or…”It’s Fun BECAUSE It’s Scary!”

This class is not being offered this session.

Ever think that even though you’re still learning things in your classes and you still love it, you really miss that thrill that you got when you did your first salto? You’re in luck. This class will work on open drops like hari kari and helicopter as well as combos like the heli kari and more painful drops like the drop to double ankle hang. It’s the perfect thing to combat the winter blues and your sense of complacency. Taught by the inimitable Sandra Kopriva.

This is an intermediate/advanced class, requiring at least 2 sessions of prior aerial instruction. Please contact us to determine whether this class is appropriate for you.

Prerequisite: Current instructor approval and the following:

  • solid double star
  • have a comfortable simple back planche that you can move around in (straighten your legs, bend your legs, look different directions, wave at friends) without grabbing the pole;
  • with your hands close together on the rope, your arms bent, and your body in a tuck; be able to open up *very slowly and smoothly* into a straight-arm hollow-body hang and back 3 times (it’s ok if the return to the bent-arm tuck hang is fast or ugly).
