Versatile Arts is offering a couple classes that are specific to the “horizontal apparatus” – aka, lyra and trapeze. Be sure to check out our Versatile Arts Workshops, too! Some of our instructors are offering workshops you may be interested in.
Lyra Clinic
Wednesdays from 4:30 to 6:00 pm. Taught by Nancy.
This mixed-level lyra class will cover basic vocabulary up to more challenging moves and will include some doubles & hand-loop work. This class is appropriate for those with some exposure to lyra. Apparatus available: single and double pt lyra.
Advanced Trapeze 3+
Sundays from 4:30 to 6:30 pm. Taught by Elizabeth.
Big drops, unlikely combos, and hard a** strength moves, plus conditioning that’s not for the faint of heart. You will learn to use the lines to spot each other.
Prerequisite: You must have a solid ankle hang and a strong full body beat.
2pt Trapeze, Sling, & Cloud Swing
Mondays from 6:15 to 7:45 pm. Taught by Tamara.
This exciting new class will explore a variety of 2-point apparatus (sling, cloudswing, and trapeze) and also some single-point sling, investigating how a given skill can be translated across them. This is an intermediate/advanced-level class.
Prerequisite: At least 2 sessions of aerial instruction, a strong pullover, or instructor approval.
The following classes are not being offered this session – let us know if you are interested in them for a future session!
Lyra and Trapeze 2/3
This class is not being offered this session. Taught by Liza and Bev.
Having trouble deciding between trapeze and lyra? Then this is the class for you. This is an intermediate/advanced class. We’ll work on dynamic moves (rolls and drops), intermediate and advanced strength moves and balances, heel and toe hangs, and many more fun and challenging skills. Be ready to work on your conditioning and flexibility as well. This class will be warming up in the blue room.
Prerequisites: Two sessions of aerial instruction or Instructor approval. Skills: excellent pullover with beats on the trapeze, a solid pullover from dead hang or with a tiny beat on the lyra, easy front balance, solid ankle hang, rope inversions, and comfortable single knee hang
Lyra 1
This class is not being offered this session.
Nancy is back on the schedule for Session 6 and excited to introduce a whole new crop of aerialists to the joys of lyra! This is a beginner-level class, with no prior lyra experience required.
Prerequisite: Intro to Aerials
Lyra 2/3: Shape and Dynamics
This class is not being offered this session.
New for Session 6! This is an intermediate/advanced class, taught by Elizabeth Rose. We’ll split our focus between several things: 1) dynamic moves (rolls and drops) unique to hoop, 2) int/adv strength moves and balances, many of which translate from trapeze but feel different while spinning on a curved bar, 3) techniques for spinning and how to use your spin or work around it while moving on the hoop, and 4) experimenting with the negative space in your hoop and creating transitions (it’s very Zen-like– all those circles and spirals!)
Prerequisites: Decent splits (sorry, it’s hoop), strong single knee hangs, solid pullover (from dead hang or small beat, NOT from jumping off the floor).
Trapeze 2/3
This class is not being offered this session.
Taught by Elizabeth Rose, this class will take you beyond the trapeze basics into a world of dynamic tricks and creative transitions. We will work on hip circles (front & back), ankle drops (from different positions), toe and heel hangs (and maybe singles and neck hangs), rope turns, rollups, wraps, (and maybe drops), meathooks, and maybe planches. All “maybes” depend on student readiness as determined by the instructor. We will definitely up the ante on conditioning and flexibility training.
This is an intermediate/advanced class, requiring at least 2 sessions of prior aerial instruction. Please contact us to determine whether this class is appropriate for you.
Prerequisite: Two sessions of aerial instruction or Instructor approval. Skills: perfect pullover, easy front balance, solid ankle hang, rope inversions, and comfortable single knee hang — all on the high bar.
Lyra Act Creation
This class is not being offered this session.
This all-levels class will focus on creating new routines on lyra. Apparatus available: single pt lyra, dbl pt lyra, trapyra (combination trapeze/lyra).
Prerequisite: This class is appropriate for all students who have completed at least one session of Aerial 1.
