Tired of rope burns? Can’t find aerial clothing that fits right? Need something special for a performance? We offer several styles of unitard that can be customized to suit your needs and fit your shape. Many of these styles can work for men as well as women.
Styles
- Keyhole Back: Our most popular style with full coverage in front, a tab collar, and a keyhole opening in back. Usually sleeveless but sleeves can be added.
- Scoop-neck/Tank: With or without sleeves, this is a simple, comfortable style for everyday workout wear but can also be dressed up to serve as a unique costume.
- Halter or Camisole Top: Two sleeveless options with optional bra lining.
- Zippered: Full coverage, stand-up collar, front or back zipper.
- Suspender Pants: Increasingly popular, these high-waisted, yet flattering, pants allow you to wear whatever top you want while always protecting your midsection.
Fabric
We are happy to work with your fabric, or we can purchase it for you based on your specifications.
Unitard fabric must have 2-way stretch, preferably 75% in at least one direction (i.e., 4 inches of fabric stretches to 7 inches). Unitards generally require 1.5 to 2 yards of material, depending upon the length and whether sleeves are desired. More fabric is required to match stripes and other directional patterns.
Seattle-area stores that provide good stretch fabrics include:
- Seattle Outdoor Fabrics. We recommend their Spandura lycra for everyday workout clothing. They also carry a nice cotton lycra that is a bit lighter and less expensive.
- Display and Costume. A good source for solid-color stretch velour, animal prints, and other costume fabrics.
- Pacific Fabrics. The Northgate location often has interesting stretchy material in the “special occasion” section. The remnant tables at the outlet store on 4th Ave S are hit-and-miss but have provided some great finds in the past.
Prices
Prices are directly related to the complexity of the design. A custom unitard will generally cost $30 to $80, not including fabric, with lined or zippered styles at the higher end of the pricing scale. A simple sleeveless keyhole or scoop-neck style will typically cost between $40 and $50. Spandura suspenders pants generally run about $55 including fabric.
