Choreography and Act Development

For students ready to move beyond skills and into the work of choreography and performance, we offer a variety of classes, both apparatus-specific and general.  See below for our current offerings in these areas.

Be sure to check out our Versatile Arts Workshops, too! Some of our instructors are offering workshops you may be interested in.

Currently Registering for Session 1: January 2nd - February 26, 2018.

Ground Choreography 101

Thursdays from 10:00 – 11:30 AM, taught by Jill in the Ballroom.

Have you dreamed of creating ground choreography for an act but didn’t know where to start? We will begin each class with guided improvisations and games, then dive into tricks and tools for generating original movement phrases. Each week builds on the previous one, leading up to creating your own “mini solo” to be presented in an informal showing on the last day of class, so regular attendance is important! This class is a prerequisite to Ground Choreo 102: Floor to Air which will be offered next session.

Cost: $208 ($10 late fee in effect December 26th)
Prerequisite: None!

Movement Quality

Tuesdays from 7:40 – 9:10 PM, taught by Jenn in the Ballroom.

Utilizing various techniques and performance drills, you will explore the different categories of movement quality. There will be plenty of guided jam time and technique training. Some new skills may be introduced, but this class will mostly explore movements you are already familiar with to help you create your own pathways and style. There will be a collaborative environment with no judgement – to help you understand your own movement by discussing the movement you see in others.

This is an intermediate/advanced class.

Cost: $208 ($10 late fee in effect December 26th)
Prerequisite: This class is an Intermediate Development class. You must meet the Intermediate Foundation graduation requirements.

Straps Performance Drop-In

Wednesdays 6:00 – 7:30 PM, taught by Leah in the Cathedral.

So you’ve been working on your strength and your straps skills, but want to put them together as an art, not just for conditioning? This is the class for you. You *must* have instructor permission to join this class.

While this is a drop-in class, you must pre-register for each class you wish to attend so that we may be sure to have an appropriate number of instructors each week. Registration cut-off is 3 hours before class.  If you register but do not cancel more than 3 hours in advance, you will still be charged.  You may show up at class without pre-registering, but you will pay an extra $5 drop-in fee.

Cost: $26 per class
Prerequisites: Instructor Permission

Ensemble Show Creation for Haiti Benefit

This class is not being offered this session.

We will create solo, group, and ensemble performance on multiple apparatus for a show benefitting MamaBaby Haiti, an organization that runs a birth center in Northern Haiti.

The show will be based on the book “The Seven Sisters of Sleep,” a celebrated drug classic, written in 1860, which surveys seven narcotic plants: tobacco, coca, marijuana, betel, datura, opium, and amanita muscaria. There will be seven solos, one based on each plant. There will also be an aerial “corps” which will perform a group aerial act, as well as intermittent bits throughout the show. We will collaborate on costume and choreography as an ensemble, under the direction of Lara Paxton.

This show will also include the Showgirls Lyra piece that was started in the summer. Students will continue to work on a character-based duo hoop act to be performed in a synchronized group a la aerialistas cupcakes.

Lara was behind the “Aerial Army of Love,” a community of student and professional aerialists who put on “AerLift.” This yearly student and professional fundraising showcase raised thousands of dollars over five years for small grassroots organizations working to alleviate extreme poverty around the world.
Enrollment by instructor approval. All Showgirls Lyra students are invited to join this class. Please contact Lara for more information.
This is an intermediate/advanced class.

Prerequisite: This class is an Intermediate/Advanced class. You must have instructor permission to join. Please contact Lara for more information.
