Due to COVID-imposed restrictions, we are not currently offering drop-in open gym. We are, however, offering reservation-based open practices a few times a week. These are 2-hour blocks, inclusive of rigging, warmup, and sanitizing time. Cost is $20 and preregistration is required.
We have three adjustable points in the Cathedral as well as 6 hard points hung with studio ropes/tissus and three double-point trapezes at various heights. You may bring your own equipment or use studio equipment; the open practice monitor will contact you ahead of time to find out what you are planning to use. Equipment will not be shared unless by explicit agreement of all relevant participants.
Note that priority use of the pulleys will be given to lyras, slings, single-point trapeze, and straps over personal ropes and tissus. Personal equipment may be rigged to the studio hard points during open practice by arrangement with the monitor. Studio rentals can be arranged for those who want guaranteed time on the pulley points on their own equipment.
Open Practices are open to students with an approval level of 1B or higher. If you are new to VA, please schedule an evaluation by emailing us at email@example.com.

We reserve the right to cancel any practice with fewer than 3 people registered.
We may add to this schedule based on demand so let us know if there are other days/times you’d like. Just note that our class schedule is quite full so it’s challenging to find free 2-hour slots.

Open gym at VA means drop-in aerial training time that is monitored but unsupervised – i.e., you are training on your own, and there is someone in charge of making sure everyone is following the rules and training safely, but there is no instructor present to direct or correct you. It’s a great time to practice skills, gain strength and endurance, and work on acts – and also to enjoy the VA community and see what other folks are working on (but NOT to copy them or ask them to teach you things!).
Open gym sessions range from 2-4 hours. Within those times, you may train as long as you wish – the drop-in rate is just $14/person. Prepaid punchcards allow you to pay for 10 visits in advance at a 10% discount. Training memberships include unlimited open gym visits. And we provide open gym hours every day of the week! Beginners must have completed an introductory class or the equivalent. We reserve the right to deny or postpone access to those we feel are not yet experienced enough to train on their own.
Open gym is primarily an 18-and-over activity. We will consider allowing access to youth students 16 or older with at least a year of aerial training at VA. For teen students who have trained elsewhere, we require that they take at least a few private lessons or a session of classes with us so that we can be assured of their level of maturity and responsibility.
All open gym users must sign a user agreement as well as a liability release form. You are encouraged to fill out these forms online before you come in – no need to print anything out!
